Do Not Buy Botox Online or Inject It Yourself

Published February 3, 2026

Botox (botulinum toxin) is a product that is used cosmetically to help reduce wrinkles. It is injected into areas on the face and works by blocking the nerves to reduce muscle movement for a short time. Even if used the right way, it can sometimes cause problems like muscle paralysis (immobility). It should only be given by healthcare professionals who are authorized to purchase and administer Botox and have been trained in the injection procedure. Botox that is purchased online may be counterfeit (fake), contaminated, and unsafe.

In November 2025, the CDC reported that three women had to go to the hospital after giving themselves Botox they bought online. The women were from New York, Texas, and Wisconsin. They thought they were buying real Botox from Korea and China, but after injecting it, they developed serious side effects. The women were having problems swallowing, talking (slurred, slow speech), voice changes (hoarseness), double vision, and eyelid drooping. They were all treated and most of the symptoms went away, but some remained.

This is not the first time people have had bad reactions after using fake or unapproved Botox purchased online. A CDC report from 2024 says that 19 people in nine states got very sick after getting fake Botox or getting shots from people who were not trained or licensed.

The CDC warns that Botox sold online can be counterfeit, contaminated, ineffective, and unsafe and should not be used.

Here’s what you can do: Always talk to your doctor before getting Botox. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says Botox is safe only when given by a trained medical professional. You should only get Botox from a doctor or clinic that is authorized to buy and administer it. Do not buy Botox online or attend “parties” that offer Botox injections. Do not try to inject Botox yourself. Only trained medical professionals should administer Botox following FDA recommendations. The products should be purchased from authorized distributors. If you have side effects after getting Botox, get medical help right away. Report any adverse events, including those related to possible counterfeit products, to ISMP and FDA.
