Reporting a Medication Error

Feeding Tubes With Enfit Connectors

Published February 17, 2023

Errors occur when medicines are given the wrong way. This can easily happen when a medicine is in a syringe. For example, oral liquid medicines may be accidentally given into the vein (intravenously). This can happen if the syringe can easily connect to tubing used to give medicine into the vein (intravenously). To help prevent these types of errors, ENFit connectors (Figure 1) and syringes were developed.

ENFit products were specifically designed for feeding tubes. They do not connect to any other medical tubes. So, if you or a family member has a feeding tube with an ENFit connector, a new resource is now available to help ensure you get the correct devices.

The Global Enteral Device Supplier Association (GEDSA) has created an ENFit guide. This guide is intended as a resource for patients and caregivers to help identify the ENFit pharmacy products and devices (e.g., medicine syringes, bottle adaptors) that may be needed. This guide will help patients and caregivers obtain the correct medical equipment they need by either purchasing it themselves or communicating this information to their medical supplier.
