Over-the-counter antacids are used to treat heartburn and indigestion. Popular brands such as TUMS and Alka-Seltzer contain calcium carbonate as their active ingredient. They come in different forms such as chewables and gummies, to name a few. These products usually work well to treat an upset stomach and ease heartburn. However, many of these well-known products come in a variety of flavors and formulations. Sometimes they may include other unwanted ingredients. For example, TUMS Chewy Bites+ Sleep Support (Figure 1) also contains melatonin. Melatonin is a sleep aid and is supposed to help you fall asleep faster; it does not treat heartburn. TUMS Chewy Bites+ Sleep Support should only be taken before bed. It should not be used throughout the day to relieve heartburn. However, it is possible for various TUMS products to be mixed up. Unfortunately, stores will keep all antacid products on the same shelves next to each other. This can make it confusing when trying to select the best product for you, especially if you do not take the time to fully read the label.
Here’s what you can do: When purchasing over-the-counter medicine, it is important to read the label. Only purchase products that contain the ingredients needed to treat your symptoms. For example, if you need an antacid to treat your heartburn, make sure it does not include melatonin for sleep, or another ingredient that is used to treat another condition. If you do want to take the combination product that includes calcium carbonate and melatonin, be sure to read the Drug Facts label and follow the directions. Do not take more medicine than recommended. And only take it before going to bed. Do not take other forms of melatonin when you take TUMS Chewy Bites+ Sleep Support. If too much melatonin is taken, it can cause you to feel confused, disoriented, feel extra sleepy during the day, or give you a headache. If you have any questions about this product or any over-the-counter medicine, ask your pharmacist for help.
